What does pigs have to do with hair? Pigs with curly tails? Not everyone has curly hair… Hmmm….
The word pigtails have been used since the 1600’s to describe a twist of tobacco, as it reminded people of a pig’s tail. Eventually, the term began to describe a hairstyle with two gatherings of hair also commonly known as twin tails.
The most fascinating pigtail fact that I recently came across is that in some regions of China, there is a tradition that relates a girl’s marital status with the number of tails worn in her hair. A girl seen with two pigtails or two buns suggests that she is available, yet once she marries, replaces the hairstyle with only one pigtail or bun. Just as straight forward as a dating app!
Pigtails have been popularized since the 1960’s in anime and manga culture. In Japan, they celebrate a national holiday called “Twin Tail Day” on February 2nd every year.
The twin tails, most commonly worn by children, evoke an essence of youth and innocence. Might be a fun change if your looking to shave a few years off. Ha!
